Chapter one

Morning.

Wake up on the water.

King bedroom with a view over Rice Lake

Both upstairs king bedrooms face the lake and share a walkout balcony.

Sunlight lifts the dew while the lake lies still. Ground coffee and filters are waiting. Take your first cup out to the balcony.

"Mornings with coffee on the deck and evenings watching the water shimmer gave us all the feels."
Juliana, September 2025

Chapter two

The day.

The lake is yours.

Private dock reaching into Rice Lake
Two single kayaks ready at the shore

Two kayaks and life jackets are included. Cast for Rice Lake's famous bass and walleye right off the dock, or claim a Muskoka chair and do absolutely nothing.

Chapter three

Golden hour.

The show starts around seven.

Patio dinner setting
Hot tub overlooking the bay

Dinner on the patio, then the best seat on the bay: the hot tub faces west, June through October. Time it right and you soak through the whole show.

Golden hour over Rice Lake from the dock The sun touching the horizon across the water Afterglow over the lake after sundown

The sun melts into the lake.

Every single night. Facing west, with nothing across the bay but parkland.

"A beautiful sunset that you can watch every single night."
Jorien, October 2024

Chapter four

Night.

Stay up late.

Fire pit glowing in the backyard

Fire pit and Muskoka chairs by the water.

End the night under a sky full of stars. And on lucky nights, the sky does this:

Act two

Winter doesn't close the cottage.
It transforms it.

The lake freezes solid for ice fishing, 215 km of groomed snowmobile trails start right in Keene, and the slope becomes a private toboggan run.

"Jennifer was exceptional. Our family weekend was rescued. Games, hot tub, kayaking, all our needs were met and fun was had."
Sue, May 2026
"We just returned from our second stay at this incredible cottage. It has clearly earned its status as a guest favourite, and it's certainly ours."

Good to know

Common questions

How many guests does it sleep?

It comfortably sleeps 10 and accommodates up to 15 on request, across 5 bedrooms and 6 beds (2 kings, 2 queens, and 2 twins).

Good to know before you book

You let yourselves in with a smart lock. Check in is after 4 pm and checkout is by 11 am. The renter must be 25 or older, quiet hours are 11 pm to 7 am out of respect for year round neighbours, and there are no parties or events. Small, well behaved pets are welcome (one per booking, a $100 fee). Four of the five bedrooms are up a flight of stairs, with one bedroom and bathroom on the main floor. Guests take their garbage and recycling out at checkout, and we are glad to help arrange disposal.

Can we swim in the lake?

The dock is wonderful for fishing, paddling, and launching a boat, and the water warms up nicely in summer. The shoreline is a natural, weedier lakebed rather than a sandy beach, so for classic sandy swimming most guests head to Beavermead, Roger’s Cove, or Squirrel Creek, all within 20 to 30 minutes. There is also a shallow, sandy stretch of the lake, reachable by boat, that families love.

What’s included?

Five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a renovated full kitchen, hot tub, fire pit, two kayaks, a private dock, a BBQ, and fast wifi (47 Mbps) that reaches down to the fire pit.

What’s provided, and what should we bring?

We provide all bed linens, a kitchen fully equipped for ten (with coffee, oil, and basic seasonings), propane for the BBQ, soap and shampoo, two kayaks with life jackets, and board games. Please bring your own bath towels and paper towels. Firewood is sold on the honour system by a vendor three minutes away.

How are the bedrooms laid out?

Five bedrooms, six beds, and two full bathrooms (one on each floor). Upstairs: two king rooms that share a walkout balcony over the lake, a queen room with a garden view, and a room with two twin beds. On the main floor, a queen room. It sleeps 10 comfortably, with space for larger groups on air mattresses.

Is there parking?

Yes, the driveway comfortably fits 6 cars, which suits a larger group arriving in several vehicles.

Where is the cottage located?

On the waterfront of Rice Lake in Keene, Ontario, in the Kawarthas, about 90 minutes (140 km) east of Toronto and roughly 20 minutes from Peterborough.

Is the cottage available in winter?

Yes, all year. Winter brings the ice and a quiet, snow globe version of the lake.

How is the cottage heated and cooled?

It stays comfortable year round. Summer has central air conditioning, winter has central heating from an electric furnace plus a heat pump in the dining area, and a wood stove indoors for cozy evenings.

Where do we eat and get groceries?

Keene has a Beer Store, an LCBO, and the legendary Muddy’s Pit BBQ two minutes away. Peterborough, about 20 minutes off, covers full grocery stores, restaurants, and a cinema. The renovated kitchen is set up for cooking in for the whole group.
